In order to prepare BSN graduates to utilize sound evidence based practices in their clinical reasoning, RN-BSN programs should focus on exposing the student to information systems that provide data about quality improvement (American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], 2008, p. 18). Often, nursing students are not familiar with the “language” of scholarly searches and information gathering. This means that the curriculum should include explicit knowledge in how to search for and use scholarly information to inform their practice (e.g. McCulley & Jones, 2014; AACN, p. 16). One way to provide this skill in on-line courses is through the use of the Embedded Librarian. The Embedded Librarian promotes the collaboration between nurse faculty and librarians by making the librarian an active presence in on-line educational platforms. This allows students “one-click” access to the librarians and library staff for guidance in searching, obtaining, formatting and utilization of scholarly materials for use in on-line activities, assignments, papers, and presentations.
