Alex Haley's original research materials and working drafts for Roots on African Americans Post Civil War.This material illustrates the Civil War battles that African Americans participated in.

"In less than a year after Bull Run, in May, 1862, the First South Carolina Regiment was organized by Major General David Hunter. A month later, the Corps d'Afrique, comprising the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Native Guards, was brought into action. These were the first Negro combat troops of the war."
